After losing the initial Season Opener on May 9th due to weather the Cottage Grove Speedway finally got the 2014 Kage Kart year started on Friday May 30th. A good crop of cars would fill the pit area to kick the weekend off and was called the “Prelude To The Marvin Smith Memorial Grove Classic”.

In Pee Wee action it was all Jayden Trupp. The Coos Bay youngster, in the Nexdor Tobacco and More #72 QRC, would dominate and lead the entire distance of the main event to win his first race at CGS in only his first visit. Finishing in the runner-up position was the Mary’s Gateway Laundry/Ken Stevenson Trucking/DT Machine #75W QRC of Gavyn Woody from Elkton.

The same sort of thing would happened in the 5HP main event. Austin Sause of Cottage Grove in his Sause Racing #7 QRC led the entire distance to win in the 2014 Season Opener. The rest of the finishing order would consist of the Stere Racing #32 QRC of Cottage Grove’s Isaac Stere in second followed by Abby Ellison from Roseburg in her Gibson Taxidermy/Umpqua Oats/HighLine Image and Design #8A QRC.

Despite a brief battle for the lead early in the 125cc main event it was pretty much smooth sailing for Kyle Roles of Lebanon. Roles would lead the entire distance to go on to win the race as he defends his track championship by piloting The Knothole Market/Big Sky Landscaping/Bunce Equipment #02 QRC entry.

Connor Hanson of Creswell was second in the Hanson Contract Cutting/DT Motorsports/BC Motorsports/Horner’s Inc. #55H QRC while in third was Sutherlin’s Destiney Smith in her Destiney Smith Motorsports #18S QRC. Finishing in fourth would be Oregon City driver Dustin Asher in the Checkered Flag Asphalt Paving & Sealcoating/Big Sky Landscaping/Kelly’s Café #6A QRC.

In 250cc action it was an incident filled event including a red flag on the opening start. Matthew Bangle of Creswell would lead the first few laps in his Farmers Insurance/Rainbow Graphic Signs/The Wright Shop #79 QRC before losing the lead on lap three to Bailey Hibbard. Hibbard, of Medford and piloting the C&H Motorsports/Tangible Real Estate Investment/Carpet & Vinyl Liquidators #1 QRC would lead the rest of the distance to win the feature in his first ever CGS appearance.

Connor Hanson would surprise everyone in his 250cc debut by finishing in second in the Hanson Contract Cutting/DT Motorsports/BC Motorsports/Horner’s Inc. #55H QRC while coming home in third was Adam Morin from Roseburg in his C&S Transmissions/Next Generation Paint Supply #12 QRC. The rest of the top five would be made up of Portland’s Duke Johnson in the Oregon Outlaws Speed Shop/Luck O’ Jonny/Old Black Daddy Foster Car #151 RFC in fourth and the Buck Creek Customs/Bonnichson Repair/McShane’s Bar & Grill #55 QRC of Casey Doolittle from Cottage Grove was fifth.

Like the 250cc main the Open Kage feature would see several incidents including a red flag on the opening lap. But when it was all said and done Makenzie Thompson from Harrisburg was able to lead the entire distance to pick up the victory. It was also the first career Open Kage victory for Makenzie and her Village Green Resort/Bunce Equipment/BC Motorsports/Rocket Designs #1W RFC machine.

Roseburg’s Brady Senger was a respectable second in his Whit-Log Trailers/Oregon Tool & Supply/Mufflers and More #8 QRC and crossing the stripe in third was the Comforts Suites of Salem/Dragonflydecals.com/Quantum Chassis #22J Quantum of Jake Ferguson from Cottage Grove. The balance of the top five would be made up of Cottage Grove’s Patrick Dills driving the All Seasons Equipment/Keith Whitaker Trucking/Inside Line Promotions/BC Motorsports #5D QRC in fourth and the Oregon Outlaws Speed Shop/P.G.H. Excavating/R.S. Race Products/Big Sky Landscaping #13* RFC of Sherwood teenager Casey Starr.

In the Micros it was pure domination by Brady Janson from Langley, British Columbia. Jason would lead the entire distance to pick up the victory for him and the Richmond Engines/XXX Race Co./Firedown Graphics/Rutz Racing #8J XXX entry owned by Doug Rutz.

The #67 machine of David Hass from Noti was second while behind him in third was Rex Rhodes of La Pine in his #55. The rest of the finishing order would be the #93 of Nathan Rhodes from Cottage Grove in fourth.

The Cottage Grove Kage Kart season will continue on Friday July 25th for Round #2 of 2014. For the latest news and information regarding CGS log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
