Brown on Fire with Two More Feature Wins at Knoxville!

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, May 17, 2014 – No one is hotter than Brian Brown at Knoxville Raceway. Saturday night, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver not only took his third 410 feature in a row at the famous half-mile, but he also won the 360 event as well after starting in the fifth row. It was the veteran driver’s 28th 410 win and 14th 360 win at Knoxville. He also performed a double victory performance in July of 2012. Steve Breazeale recorded his second feature win of the season and the sixth in his career in the 305 class.

Lynton Jeffrey led from his pole position at the outset in the 20-lap 410 main event. Bronson Maeschen moved into second, while Craig Dollansky and Mark Dobmeier put on a battle for third. Things were heating up, with the top five in lapped traffic, when Josh Schneiderman stopped with a flat tire at the halfway point.

Jeffrey led Maeschen, Dobmeier, Terry McCarl and Dollansky back to green flag racing. A lap later, McCarl shot by Dobmeier for third. Brown got stronger as the race wore on. When McCarl lost some momentum through the middle of turns one and two, Brown pounced on the show position on lap 17.

Things were closing up on the leader Jeffrey, but he took the white flag in the lead. Meanwhile, Don Droud Jr. slowed to a stop in turn three, setting up a green, white, checker finish, with Jeffrey leading Maeschen, Brown, McCarl and Dobmeier.

Brown shot past Maeschen for second in turns one and two on the restart, and carried his momentum down the backstretch in pursuit of Jeffrey. He made his winning move by diving to the bottom of turn three and leading the last two laps to victory. Jeffrey held second, ahead of Maeschen, McCarl and Clint Garner. Dobmeier, Davey Heskin, Ian Madsen, Dollansky and Brooke Tatnell rounded out the top ten.

Brown also set quick time, while Wayne Johnson, Dusty Zomer, Heskin and Dobmeier won the heats. Cole Wood won the B main. An incident in the third heat saw Rob Kubli and Schneiderman end up flipping. Neither were injured, and Schneiderman returned to compete in the B main and transfer to the main event.

“I just couldn’t get rolling very well early,” said Brown in Victory Lane. “I’d get my wing back too far and get tight. I got racing with Terry there, and we race each other as hard as anybody. I just couldn’t get going, but we got our wing where we needed it to be and we took off. On the restart, one went to the bottom and one through the middle. I went to the top and got such a good run. I was running over Lynton on the backstretch and I was able to put a winning move on. (Jeffrey) has taken over sprint car racing, and he’s done a lot for our race team with Vortex Wings. We’re proud to run his wings.”

The 360 feature was just as exciting. After Sawyer Phillips and Jordan Boston had difficulties, and Jonathan Cornell got into the wall before a lap could be completed, Russ Hall led from his pole position early with Jon Agan in tow. Jack Dover and Jamie Ball went back and forth for the third spot, before Tyler Brooks came to a stop entering the back pit gate with four laps in the books.

On the restart, Hall led Agan, Ball, Dover and Brown back to green. Dover surged by Ball on the restart for third, and picked off Agan for second on lap seven. With Hall running low and Dover running higher on the track, Brown moved into the top three on lap nine, and disposed of Dover two circuits later. He reeled in Hall and passed him on lap eleven, but the move was negated when Austin Alumbaugh suffered a flat right rear tire.

The four lap dash for the checkers saw Hall leading Brown, Dover, Agan and Joe Beaver back to green. Hall held his position, taking the low groove that Brown had been using. Brown shot to the cushion and made the winning pass after a fierce battle on lap 14. Hall came home second, ahead of Dover, Agan and Beaver. Justin Henderson, Nate Van Haaften, Ball, Mike Houseman Jr. and Jarrod Schneiderman rounded out the top ten. Henderson set quick time, while Wayne Johnson, Van Haaften and Brown won the heats.

“Russ is a heck of a driver, and has been a friend of mine for a long time,” said Brown in Victory Lane. “He does a great job in the 360 class. I’d like to see him win too, but we’re here to win. Starting ninth, with the caliber of drivers that are here…to be able to pull that off…it says a lot about our team.”

Steve Breazeale led from start to finish in the 12-lap 305 feature. Kade Higday smacked the backstretch wall and broke his rear-end before a lap could be completed. Breazeale drove from his pole position to the lead ahead of Mike Mayberry and Mike Philben once the green flag came out. With three laps in the books, contact between Mitchell Alexander and Tanner Edwards brought about the final slowdown of the event.

Breazeale led Mayberry, Philben, Keoni Texeira and Kevin Hetrick back to green flag racing. Breazeale was never seriously challenged, but Philben worked his way into second on lap five. He would finish there behind Breazeale, and ahead of Matthew Stelzer, Mayberry and J Kinder. Hetrick, Texeira, hard-charger Stacey Alexander, Chris Walraven and McKenna Haase rounded out the top ten. Stelzer set quick time, while Higday, Breazeale and Haase won heat races.

“These guys are tough,” said Breazeale in Victory Lane. “They are young…I guess I’m old. It’s getting tougher all the time. I was lucky to start up front, or I would have been back in fifth or sixth. These guys are fun to race with, and I’m having a blast this year.”
