Brown Leads Three Repeat Winners at Knoxville!

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, May 10, 2014 – For the second week in a row, Brian Brown emerged victorious in 410 action at the Knoxville Raceway. This time, he made his winning move by passing Ian Madsen with two laps to go to secure his 27th career victory at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World”. Joe Beaver won for the second time in a row and third time this season in the 360 class, and Matthew Stelzer became a two-time winner in 2014 in the 305 class. The Dirt Trucks also visited, running two features, and Kevin Sather emerged victorious in both events.

Before a lap could be completed, Don Droud Jr. brought out the red on the backstretch. The Sonner #47 team went to work and got him back out for the restart. On the next try, Dustin Selvage destroyed his sprinter in a frontstretch ground pounder. He was uninjured.

Madsen led the 20-lap 410 feature early, ahead of Dusty Zomer and Brown. Danny Lasoski lost power and exited on lap three, while Terry McCarl took over his fourth place spot in the running order. Justin Henderson joined the lead quartet in fifth as those cars separated themselves from the pack.

Contact between McCarl and Henderson on lap nine caused damage that sidelined the latter, while McCarl came to the work area to repair a flat left rear tire. Brad Loyet also spun in turn three. The restart saw Madsen ahead of Brown, Davey Heskin, Lynton Jeffrey and Bronson Maeschen. The lead trio pulled away again.

Brown shot by Zomer on lap fifteen and set his sights on Madsen. He made his winning move on lap 19, sliding in front of the Aussie to take the lead and the $3,000 prize. Madsen, Zomer, Maeschen and Heskin followed. Craig Dollansky, hard-charger Droud, Jeffrey, Ryan Bunton and Mark Dobmeier completed the top ten. McCarl posted quick time over the 36-car field, and unofficially kept his point lead, while Jason Johnson, AJ Moeller, Brad Loyet and Clint Garner won heat races. Garrett Dollansky copped the B main.

“On that first lap, Danny (Lasoski) went across my front and a big clod knocked my tear-offs off,” said Brown in Victory Lane. “More than anything it was a hindrance to wipe my shield on every straightaway. The Dunkin’s did well with the track again tonight. Those guys were keeping a good pace. I was just trying to wait until lapped traffic. We got there the one time, and the yellow came out. That messed my game plan up, but we finally got Ian there. Two in a row…it feels great!”

Jonathan Cornell led from his pole position early in the 15-lap 360 feature. Joe Beaver settled into second ahead of Jon Agan. By the halfway point of the 15-lap event, Cornell, Beaver and Agan had separated themselves from the fourth place car of Jason Johnson and Justin Henderson.

A stumble over the cushion by Cornell on lap nine, set up the winning pass by Beaver, who cruised to his third win of the year, and the sixth of his career at Knoxville. Cornell held off Agan for second, ahead of Henderson and Jason Johnson. Nate Van Haaften, Jamie Ball, Russ Hall, Calvin Landis and Matt Moro rounded out the top ten. Henderson posted quick-time, while Moro, Tony Shilling and Russ Hall won heats.

“Jonathan had us smoked and I was just chasing,” said Beaver in Victory Lane. “I knew after he got the jump, we just needed to ride around. It’s always tougher for the leader to get through traffic than second is. Once he got through them, it was easier for us. It seemed like we caught everything well.”

The 12-lap 305 main event also went non-stop. J Kinder led from his pole position early, ahead of Kevin Hetrick and Mike Philben. Philben then took second, while Matthew Stelzer moved into third on lap three. On lap five, Stelzer worked by Philben for second.

Kinder slowed a bit in lapped traffic on lap eight, and Stelzer took over the point for good, winning his second this year, and fourth in his career at Knoxville. Kinder finished second, ahead of Steve Breazeale, who worked by Kade Higday on lap nine for third. Mitchell Alexander was fifth. Chris Walraven, Philben, McKenna Haase, hard-charger Stacey Alexander and Keoni Texeira rounded out the top ten. Breazeale timed in quickest, while Walraven, Josh Jones and Mike Mayberry won heats. Harvey Pitt flipped before the second heat could start, and Andee Beierle turned over after the feature checkers. Neither was injured.

“It’s just my Dad and me here again tonight, and I just have to thank him,” said Stelzer. “I have to thank my wife, daughter, mom, grandma and grandpa. This feels good.”
