Dollansky Wires Field at Knoxville!

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, April 26, 2014 – Craig Dollansky held off both the challenges of Terry McCarl and the rain to record his 13th career victory at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night. Billy Alley won his eleventh career 360 feature, and Matthew Stelzer won for the third time in the 305 class.

Starting on the pole, Dollansky led Mark Dobmeier and Bronson Maeschen early in 20-lap 410 feature. McCarl made his move into third a lap later and tried to reel in the second place car of Dobmeier. Dobmeier was eliminated with nine laps in the books, when contact with a lapped car sent him upside down in turn two. He was uninjured.

Light rain fell during the red flag period, but the race was continued with Dollansky leading McCarl, Lynton Jeffrey, Justin Henderson and Maeschen on the restart. Henderson shot into third on the restart, as McCarl pursued the leader. Garrett Dollansky spun on lap 15 bringing caution again.

McCarl made a move on the low side of Dollansky on the restart, but the Elk River, Minnesota native held the point aboard the Big Game Treestands #7. Maeschen was running fifth with 17 laps in, when he spun, bringing the final caution of the event. Jeffrey used the restart to shoot by Henderson to finish third behind Dollansky and McCarl, who fell short with another slider. Ian Madsen was fifth. Wayne Johnson, Davey Heskin, Dustin Selvage, Brooke Tatnell and hard-charger Cole Wood rounded out the field. Henderson set quick time, while Selvage, Heskin and Josh Schneiderman won heats. Wood won the B main.

“We made the right adjustments on the car,” said Dollansky in Victory Lane. “It’s great to win out here tonight. You never know what’s going to happen in these races. I was just glad to see the rain held off. This is a special race track. To be back here racing with my son (Garrett), is great. Terry is a good competitor and a great guy. We had a pretty good race on those restarts.”

Alley won for the first time at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World” since 2008. He cruised to this one, leading every lap. He was never seriously challenged in the 15-lapper. One red flag, and one caution plagued the event. . On la nine, seventh running Carson McCarl was unable to avoid the lapped car of Mike Van Haaften, and jumped his right rear, sending his machine upside down. He was unhurt.

On lap eleven, a fifth running, Jamie Ball, contacted the wall and came to a stop. Alley led Jon Agan, Russ Hall, Joe Beaver and Justin Henderson back to green flag racing. Henderson passed Beaver and then Hall to complete the top three behind Alley. Hall was fourth, and Beaver fifth. Nate Van Haaften, Calvin Landis, Matt Moro, hard-charger Jeff Swindell and Jarrod Schneiderman rounded out the top ten. Alley also posted quick time, while Tom Lenz, Ball and Schneiderman won heats.

“This is probably one of the biggest wins in my career, because it’s been so long,” said Alley in Victory Lane. “To win at Knoxville is a great honor. There are a lot of great racecar drivers and race teams here, no matter what class you’re in. I’m proud of our race team. Joe Steinbach created all this. I’m just blessed to be able to drive it. 50% of all our winnings go to the Git-R-Done Foundation that Larry the Cable Guy has created. That’s cool too.”

Like the other two winners, Matthew Stelzer led from start to finish in the 12-lap 305 feature. Kade Higday kept the pressure on, however, in finishing second. Season opener winner, Steve Breazeale was third after a late race battle with fourth running J Kinder. Hard-charger, Stacey Alexander came from row eight to round out the top five. Finishing the top ten were Steve Palmer, Mitchell Alexander, Kevin Hetrick, Chris Walraven and Keoni Texeira. Mike Philben posted quick time, while Higday, Stelzer and Kinder won the heats.

“I have to thank my Dad tonight,” said Stelzer. “This one is his (the team chased fuel pump issues early in the night). It’s just him and myself tonight. I couldn’t do it without him. I was really aggressive in lapped traffic. Normally, I’m not. I saw Higday behind me on the yellow. He’s going to be a good one.”
