Mullens lands on pair of HMT podiums in Kansas

Kansas native Tanner Mullens raced to strong results in his home state on Friday and Saturday as the USRA Heartland Modified Tour (HMT) stopped at Salina Speedway and 81 Speedway in the Sunflower State.

On Friday, 32 HMT teams descended on the 3/8-mile clay oval in Salina. Mullens opened the evening by driving from eighth to third in his heat race. He also began the 30-lap A-Main from the eighth position and took over the second spot on lap 16. He finished as runner-up, taking the checkered flag 0.965 seconds behind Brendon Gemmill after a late restart. Henry Chambers, Chad Wheeler and Brandon Givens completed the top five.

The next night, Mullens was one of 35 Modified drivers at the 3/8-mile 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas, for the second consecutive night of HMT racing. He started strong again with a heat-race win after starting sixth. He drew the fifth starting spot in the 30-lap feature and climbed to a third-place result, rounding out the podium behind Tyler Wollff and Gary Christian. Tyler Davis came home fourth and Gemmill finished fifth.

Mullens is now ninth in HMT points to complement his sixth-place standing in the Summit USMTS National Championship.
