Ryan Unzicker adds MARS triumph at Red Hill Raceway

A pair of MARS Late Model Championship Series events over the weekend for Ryan Unzicker resulted in his seventh trip of the season to Victory Lane in a special wrap honoring Megan's Mission Foundation.

For the Gary Gerstner Memorial on Friday at Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, Ill.), Unzicker backed up a third-place heat showing with an eighth-to-fourth run in the $5,000-to-win feature.

On Saturday evening at Red Hill Raceway (Sumner, Ill.), Ryan raced into the weekend finale with a runner-up heat finish. Taking advantage after race-long pacesetter Jason Feger bobbled on lap 20, Unzicker paced the final 10 circuits to claim his seventh win of the season and the $5,000 payday. He finished 0.651 seconds ahead of Feger with Justin Duty rounding out the podium.

“Jason set a pretty torrid pace there at the beginning. I knew I had a pretty good pace, but honestly, I knew it was gonna be tough to beat him,” Unzicker said. “I just got lucky on the restart, he pushed up a little bit and my car was good enough to get underneath.”

With the win, Ryan reduced Feger's point lead atop the MARS standings to 37 markers.
