Rodney Sanders picks up top-5 finishes at Deer Creek and Mason City

During the last weekend in June, Rodney Sanders and his Wichita Tank Racing No. 20 Modified team took on the USRA-sanctioned RacinDirt.com Thunder Summer Series at tracks in Minnesota and Iowa.

On Saturday night, Sanders was one of 34 Modified drivers competing for a $2,000 winner’s share at the 3/8-mile Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minnesota. A fourth-place result in his heat race put Sanders 15th on the grid to start the A-Main. He charged forward throughout the 25-lapper to score a fifth-place finish behind Brandon Davis, Jim Chisholm, Jake Timm and Joe Chisholm.

The series next visited Iowa’s 1/3-mile Mason City Motor Speedway on Sunday, where 14 USRA Modifieds were on hand for the Joel Showalter Memorial. Sanders once again opened the evening by driving to fourth in his heat. He started eighth in the 20-lap, $2,000-to-win feature and raced to a fourth-place result, chasing Timm, Zac Brom and Jim Chisholm under the checkered flag. Nick Murgic came home fifth.

Friday’s series opener at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin, fell victim to Mother Nature.
