Extreme Heat Cancels DIS 6/22/24

Delmar, De

Good morning Delaware International Speedway drivers, owners and fans.

While this is not a decision we take lightly, we have monitored the weather forecast all week and with the predicted heat and heat index for Friday and Saturday, track officials feel for the safety of the track preparation staff, drivers and fans to cancel the Saturday Night Speedway event. We spoke with a group of drivers and owners who all agreed the heat was a deterring factor for Saturday’s race.

The extremely high heat index and temperature would provide dangerous conditions for our staff to endure the 12 to 16 hours of prep time, Friday and Saturday. The period of lap time the drivers would be suited up could result in a dangerous combination altogether.

In addition, it would be very difficult to keep moisture in the track resulting in more extreme tire wear that would be additional cost to the race teams.

With that being said, we know this will be a disappointing decision and it is not a decision we are happy with but we do take the safety of our staff and drivers seriously. We will look at the schedule and see if there is a possibility for rescheduling the race in the future.

Our next speedway race is scheduled for July 13 for Delmar Fire Dept Night at the Speedway. Our apologies for the schedule change and we hope to see you back July 13.
