Tim Cox Returns to Victory Lane; Miles Doherty Condition Update
On a track full of character with so much young talent in the field, you’d be forgiven for thinking the front runners were all up and coming stars at Wilmot this past Saturday night.
Think again.
Veteran Tim Cox led flag to flag and utterly dominated the 20 lap AutoMeter Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Car Series A Main.
“Well Scotty [Neitzel] won one here last week with the IRA for us old guys.” Cox joked in victory lane. “I thought I’d better join him this week. This is incredible. This might be one of the last races I ever win so this one means a lot.”
Cox had the field covered, but behind the veteran driver it was a hornets nest from 2nd on back. 2022 series Rookie of the Year Eric Wilke finished a comfortable 2nd after fending off a hard charging pack. Ryan Marshall, Chris Klemko, Jimmy Sivia, Zach Raidart, Tyler Kuxhouse, Johnny Fahl, Derek Crane and Tristan Furseth rounded out the Top 10.
Kuxhouse picked up the night’s Quick Time award, while Marshall, Allen Hafford and Fahl earned heat race victories.
In qualifying a major incident occurred involving the #8 of Delmar, Iowa’s Miles Doherty. Doherty was completing his final qualifying lap when the 15 year old made contact with a slowing #21T of Mitchell Reich and went airborne. The car made heavy contact with the turn 1 wall and came to rest outside of the racing surface. Both the IRA and Wilmot safety teams were immediately on the scene to render aid. Doherty was transported to a local hospital and then transported a second time to a different medical center for continued treatment. Doherty suffered a broken right wrist, a fractured left arm, and multiple fractured vertebrae. The family would like to extend a thank you to the safety crews, their fellow racers and the community for all of the support given to Miles over the past day. Updates on Doherty’s recovery will be posted to his team’s Facebook page.
The IRA and the Wisconsin Wingless Sprints would also like to extend well wishes to Lance Fassbender and his family and team. Lance has been a long time member of the IRA family and has competed with the series for many years. Lance suffered significant burns in a crash at the Plymouth Dirt Track in 360 competition on Saturday night.
The AutoMeter Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Car Series powered by Gandrud will continue their 2024 season this coming Saturday at the Wilmot Raceway. Tickets are available through the My Race Pass app and at the gate on race day.
