Mitchell claims podium finish in Doug Murphrey Memorial opener
Jon Mitchell climbed back aboard his W&W Timber No. 5 Modified on Friday and Saturday to participate in the prestigious 18th annual Doug Murphrey Memorial at Ark-La-Tex Speedway.
On Friday, Mitchell was among 38 USRA Modified competitors seeking a $3,500 first-place prize at the quarter-mile clay oval in Vivian, Louisiana. He began the evening with a win in his heat race and took the green flag for the 25-lap A-Main from the second spot. Mitchell led the first six circuits, and despite fighting fuel issues, finished third behind Chris Henigan and Dustin Henigan. Gary Christian and Timothy Culp completed the top five.
The next night, a 34-car Modified field descended on the “Land of Three-Wide” for the event’s $5,000-to-win finale. Mitchell came home second in his heat and rolled off from the fifth position in the 30-lap main event. He maintained a spot in the top five throughout the race, but ran into trouble with two laps remaining and recorded a 14th-place result.
