RTJ scores Castrol FloRacing Night in America opener at Macon Speedway

Coming off a pair of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series wins in Missouri, Ricky Thornton Jr. brought the SSI Motorsports No. 20RT Late Model into battle at Macon Speedway (Macon, Ill.) on Tuesday for the Castrol FloRacing Night in America season opener.

With 27 Super Late Models entered at the 1/5-mile bullring oval, Thornton timed in fifth-fastest in his group before placing second in his heat, locking him into the A-Main. In an eventful feature that was plagued by multiple cautions, Ricky slid underneath race-long pacesetter Bobby Pierce on lap 38 and led the final 13 circuits to claim his 15th win of the season and the $20,000 payday.

He notched his fourth career Castrol FloRacing Night in America victory ahead of Jason Feger, Hudson O’Neal, Myles Moos, and Tyler Erb.

Trekking overnight to Wisconsin, Ricky hopped behind the wheel of the David Stremme-owned No. 20RT Lethal Chassis Modified on Wednesday for the inaugural Big Deal at Mississippi Thunder Speedway (Fountain City, Wis.). With prelims over the next three days setting the grid for Saturday’s $100,000-to-win A-Main, Thornton’s sixth-place preliminary feature finish on Thursday positioned him in the top-16 in points, which secured his spot into Saturday’s finale.

Lined up 16th for Saturday night's main event, Thornton was sidelined near the middle stages of the 100-lapper after losing power while running in the top-10.
