Hagerstown MD, (7/29/23)- The “Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge” series made there first ever appearance in Maryland last Saturday night, and when it was all said and done, home state product Derick Quade rose to the occasion to collect his first career series feature win. The victory for Quade, worth $5000, came steering his familiar Longhorn no.74 and it would be the second of his Hagerstown career.
Brad Lowe and Derick Quade brought the field to green with Quade bursting into the lead as the field raced off turn two. Despite a slew of cautions and a mandated lap 30 fuel stop, Quade was clearly the class of the field, as he would eventually lead all 50 circuits. Eventual runner-up and current Hagerstown Late Model Sportsman point leader Devin Hart, hounded Quade for the final 20 laps, but would have to settle for a hard fought second place finish. “Oh my god this is awesome.” An ecstatic Derick Quade stated after his first career series win. “To do it with all the cars here, there are so many good cars here tonight and this thing of ours was just about perfect tonight.” Devin Hart was satisfied with his runner-up performance. “We had a good car tonight, but Derick was just a bit better than us.” Hart reflected. “We got a lot better after the fuel stop and to come home with a second in our first series start we are pretty happy with that.” Jeff Parsons took third, 22nd starting Justin Weaver was fourth with 10th starting Shawn Shoemaker completing the top five. A series high 53 cars checked into the pit area with, Brad Lowe, Dan Breuer, Robbie Emory, Kyle Lear, Derick Quade and Jeff Parsons scoring heat race victories with Clinton Hersh and Trent Brenneman splitting twin B-mains.
Winchester Virginia’s Jason Wilkins scored his first career Hagerstown feature win in the 20 lap “Eric Johnson Memorial” Pure Stock event. Wilkins snared the race lead on the first lap, but would have to fend off a furious late race charge from Jasen Geesaman to score the $1001 victory. “Jasen raced me hard there at the end and we had to earn that one.” Wilkins said in victory lane. “We’ve got this car going pretty good this season and this is a big win for our team.” Current division point leader Keith Reed took third with Tyler Fisher and 11th starting Kristopher Hutton rounding out the top five. Heats for the 35 entries went to Tommy Caravello, Jason Wilkins, Randy Linaburg and Tyler Fisher with the B-main going to Nathan Younker.
