Pair of top-10's in DIRTcar Nationals prelims at Volusia
After a rain shower postponed Monday’s program midway through the event, Brian Shirley returned to the driver’s seat of the Bob Cullen Racing No. 3s Late Model on Tuesday at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) for the second round of the 53rd annual DIRTcar Nationals.
Starting Tuesday’s feature in 22nd via a consolation victory, Shirley was an early retiree on lap 12.
With the 48-car field split into three groups on Wednesday, Brian backed up the 11th-fastest time in his qualifying group with a seventh-place showing in his 20-lap preliminary.
On Thursday, Shirley raced into the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series sanctioned A-Main with a third-place finish in his heat. Pinned on the ninth row, Brian climbed three positions to finish 15th.
For another $12,000-to-win program on Friday, Brian got off to a slow start but was able to recover with a top-10 finish in the feature. Earning a spot into the 40-lapper through his B-Main, Shirley advanced nine spots to register a 10th-place finish.
Saturday’s 53rd annual Federated DIRTcar Nationals finale fell to wet weather.
