Shirley opens 2024 season with DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals at Volusia
The 2024 season got underway for Bob Cullen Racing and Brian Shirley on Friday at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) with the rain-shortened fifth annual DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals.
With the stacked field of 56 Late Models split into two groups, Shirley managed to race into the opener with a sixth-to-third showing in his heat race despite breaking a driveshaft late. Pinned on the ninth row for the feature, Brian was an early retiree from the 30-lapper after drawing the race's lone caution on lap 12.
On Saturday for the second round of his pursuit for the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series title, Brian backed up the sixth-fastest lap in his 28-car group with a third-place finish in his heat. Starting the $15,000-to-win DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals finale in 18th, Shirley faded four spots to finish 22nd.
