Thornton third in Tar Heel 53 at Tri-County Racetrack
Thursday saw Ricky Thornton Jr. return to the driver’s seat of the SSI Motorsports No. 20RT Late Model with the Castrol FloRacing Night in America miniseries at Tri-County Racetrack (Brasstown, N.C.).
Drawing 34 Late Models for the FK Rod Ends Tar Heel 53, Thornton’s runner-up showing in his heat race positioned him on the third row for the $23,023-to-win A-Main. Making a late pass to secure a podium finish, Ricky stole third from Jonathan Davenport on lap 49 and went onto cross the line in third. He followed Hudson O’Neal and Bobby Pierce across the line.
Thornton is currently fourth in the latest Castrol FloRacing Night in America point standings.
His weekend plans to compete with the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series at Senoia (GA) Raceway and Rome (GA) Speedway were axed by inclement weather.
