Bryan Hulbert – LONGDALE, Okla. (September 2, 2023) Bringing his overall season win count to 12 in 2023, Jason Martin kept Matt Covington at bay for Saturday’s $5,000 score at Longdale Speedway with the American Sprint Car Series presented by RacinDirt.com.

Landing nine of those wins in ASCS National Tour competition, including one at Longdale on May 20, the battle for the season championship remains close, with Martin’s consistency pushing the gap from 26 to 99 markers over Covington.

“This deal is a lot of just mental toughness,” said Martin of the season so far. “You’ve got to have people behind you telling you that you can do it, engine builders that can build a good engine, and having everything on the car be quality. I get to do the easy part, just have to have my mind straight, so it’s those people and all these fans, who I really need to thank for helping us.”

Red on the initial start, as Whit Gastineau went for a ride in the first and second turns, the restart saw Martin quickly taking off on the cushion. Cat and Mouse into traffic, the No. 95 closed several times, but to no avail.

Caution with two laps to go, Kyler Johnson and Brandon Anderson hooked bumpers, racing for fifth after the engine let go in the No. 45x. The two were able to untangle, with Johnson’s rolling to a stop on the front stretch.

Taking a look at the lead on the restart, Covington was denied the advance as Jason sped away by 1.177-seconds. Three car battle for third on the late-race green, 65-year-old Danny Wood held off the challenge for the final podium step. Brandon Anderson picked up fourth of the final turn, while Landon Britt completed the top five.

Saturday started with Jason Martin establishing a new ASCS Track Record at 14.246-seconds during The Driver’s Project Qualifying. The record was previously held by Jake Bubak at 14.565-seconds. Matt Covington and Jordon Mallett grabbed wins in AR Dyno Service Heat Race action.

The tour’s next stop will include Ferris Wheels and Fair Food at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday, September 12. The mid-week special will offer an increased purse over the previous years at $4,000 to win, $400 to start. The $10,000 to win Hockett/McMillin Memorial will follow on September 14, 15, and 16 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.

The 2023 season will mark the 32nd year of competition for the American Sprint Car Series. Spearheaded by the American Sprint Car Series National Tour, the ASCS Nation includes Regional Tours that encompass both wing and non-wing competition.
