Ricky Weiss

Weiss scores pair of runner-up finishes with Southern Nationals at Tri-County and Tazewell

Cruising into the final week of Schaeffer's Oil Southern Nationals Series competition, Ricky Weiss rolled into Toccoa Raceway (Toccoa, Ga.) on Tuesday for the tour's fifth event of the summer.

With the Top-5 in qualifying locked in, Weiss qualified just out of a transfer spot and went on to win his B-Main. For the $7,553-to-win main event, Ricky moved forward five spots to finish just outside the Top-5 in sixth.

Traveling to Ray Cook's Tri-County Racetrack (Brasstown, N.C.) on Thursday afternoon, Ricky laid down the fastest overall lap in qualifying which earned him the pole for the 40-lap main event. With another 40-lap showdown on tap, Weiss fell back to third but quickly regained the runner-up position. Despite a late-race charge for the lead, Ricky settled for a second-place outing behind the points leader Jimmy Owens.

For the penultimate event of the summer tour at North Georgia Speedway (Chatsworth, Ga.), Ricky topped the charts in his qualifying group but slipped back one spot in his heat race. Rolling off from the third-row in the 53-lap feature, Weiss quietly snuck into the Top-5 to record a fifth-place finish.

With Saturday's finale at Tazewell Speedway (Tazewell, Tenn.) pushed to Sunday evening, Weiss earned a starting position on the front row after winning his heat race. For the final $10,053-to-win feature of the summer, Ricky stayed out of trouble and ran behind eventual race-winner Dale McDowell for the entirety of the 53-lap showdown. He was followed by Jimmy Owens, Donald McIntosh, and Jason Trammell who completed the Top-5.

Ricky moved up one spot in the standings during the final event to finish third in series points.
