Ashton Winger collects three Top-10s in opening week of Hell Tour
With the Dirt Late Model Dream in their rear view mirror, Ashton Winger and his Mathews Motorsports team began their DIRTcar Summer Nationals trek at Peoria Speedway (Peoria, Ill.) on Wednesday afternoon for the first round of the Hell Tour.
With a whopping 40 Late Models in the pit area, Winger stopped the clock third-quickest in his group before picking up the victory in his heat race. For the first $5,000-to-win feature of the week, Ashton ran inside the Top-5 until his right-rear tire blew out with 16 laps remaining. He was scored 18th in final rundown.
Traveling to Kankakee County Speedway (Kankakee, Ill.) on Thursday afternoon, Ashton qualified seventh-quickest in his group before nabbing the final transfer spot in his heat race. In the $5,000-to-win feature, Ashton struggled to make up ground and finished outside the Top-10 in 11th.
Hoping for better luck at Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, Ill.) on Friday, Winger was unable to pick up a transfer spot in his heat race but earned a feature starting spot by winning his B-Main. For the $10,000-to-win show, Ashton stormed through the pack and gained 11 positions to score a sixth-place outing.
Drawing a whopping 55 entries to Fairbury Speedway (Fairbury, Ill.) on Saturday evening, Winger ripped off the second-fastest lap in his group before landing a runner-up finish in his heat. Rolling off from the fifth-row in the $10,000-to-win main event, Ashton recorded a 10th-to-seventh run in the feature.
Wrapping up Week One on Sunday at Sycamore Speedway (Sycamore, Ill.), Ashton followed up the third-quickest lap in qualifying by winning his heat race. For the final main event of the week, Winger faded late to finish in seventh.
