Ricky Thornton Jr

RTJ lands runner-up finish in Cowboy Classic at Lucas Oil Speedway

Coming off his weekend sweep with the series, Ricky Thornton Jr. returned with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) on Thursday evening at Lucas Oil Speedway (Wheatland, Mo.) for the Cowboy Classic.

Drawing 59 Late Models for the annual event that serves as the opener for the Show-Me 100 weekend, Ricky’s fifth-to-second run in his heat race placed him on the fifth row for the A-Main. Charging through the field eight spots in the 45-lapper, Thornton advanced to a second-place finish, which came behind race-long leader Jonathan Davenport with Tyler Bruening rounding out the podium.

For another $6,000-to-win preliminary feature on Friday, Thornton edged his way into the Don and Billie Gibson Tribute feature with a third-place finish in his heat. Putting on an impressive show from the 12th row, Ricky passed 21 cars in the 45-lap affair to finish third.

Locked into the second-starting position for Saturday’s $50,000-to-win Show-Me 100 via preliminary point standings, Ricky crossed the line in first when the checkered flew but was later docked four positions for failing the droop rule. He trailed Devin Moran, Tim McCreadie, Spencer Hughes, and Chris Ferguson in the final rundown.

Ricky remains atop the latest LOLMDS point standings.
