Sanders scores top-5 finishes at Lakeside and Mason City
Rodney Sanders continued his recent streak of outstanding results this weekend with no finish worse than fourth in three straight days of Dirt Modified racing.
The Happy, Texas, driver first visited Lakeside Speedway (Kansas City, Kansas) for the 12th annual Jayhawk Classic with the Summit United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS).
With the Thursday portion of the program in the Sunflower State rained out, Sanders opened the weekend on Friday by finishing third in his heat race in his familiar MB Customs No. 20, putting him in the sixth starting spot for the 35-lap, $5,000-to-win A-Main on the 4/10-mile Kansas City track. Sanders advanced three spots to finish third behind Jake O’Neil and Cayden Carter. The top five was completed by Dereck Ramirez and Tanner Mullens.
In Saturday’s USMTS Jayhawk Classic finale, Sanders’ fifth-place heat finish put him in the 14th starting spot for the 40-lap A-Main worth $10,000 to the winner. Sanders charged forward 10 spots to come home fourth behind Tyler Davis, Mullens and Ramirez. O’Neil finished fifth.
On Sunday, Sanders moved to the season opener at Mason City Motor Speedway (Mason City, Iowa) to take part in the track’s United States Racing Association (USRA) Modified division. He started ninth after a fifth-place finish in his heat race and advanced all the way to second by the 20-lap race’s checkered flag. Aaron Benson claimed the victory, with Al Hejna, Blake Arndt and Lance Mari rounding out the top-five at the 1/3-mile facility.
Sanders has now finished in the top-five in his last seven A-Mains and in nine of the last ten.
