Payton Freeman returns with World of Outlaws at Volusia
The 2023 Speedweeks continued for Payton Freeman on Monday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) aboard the Team 22 Inc. No. 22 Late Model for the 52nd running of the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals.
With 46 Late Models entered, Payton broke a wheel in his heat race while running in sixth that sent him pitside on lap seven. Slated to start on the tail of his B-Main, Freeman elected to scratch from his consolation race and save his equipment for the remainder of the week-long event.
For another $7,000-to-win prelim on Tuesday, Freeman raced his way into the feature in his B-Main after finishing fifth in his heat. Starting the feature in 22nd, Payton was an early retiree with five circuits remaining in the 25-lapper.
On Wednesday with the 52-car field split into three groups, Payton’s qualifying effort placed him on the fourth row for his prelim. Rallying from the tail after suffering a flat tire on lap 12, Freeman salvaged a 12th-place finish.
As the remainder of the week shifted to World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series sanctioned on Thursday, Freeman came in seventh in his heat before placing fifth in his B-Main, forcing him to use a provisional into the show. He recorded a 28th-place finish in the 30-lapper.
Back in action on Saturday afternoon after losing Friday’s program to Mother Nature midway through heat races, Payton missed a transfer spot by one car in both in his heat and B-Main. Relying on a provisional into the $20,000-to-win DIRTcar Nationals finale, Freeman charged forward eight spots in the 50-lap affair to place 22nd.
