Ashton Winger

Runner-up finish in DIRTcar Nationals prelim at Volusia

Ashton Winger returned to the driver’s seat of the Jeff Mathews Motorsports No. 12 Late Model at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) on Monday evening to compete in the 52nd running of the Federated Auto Part DIRTcar Nationals.

In a field of 51 Late Models, Winger snuck into the opener with a fourth-place finish in his heat. Gaining two spots in the 25-lapper, Ashton crossed the line in 12th.

For another $7,000-to-win preliminary on Tuesday, Ashton’s second-place finish in his heat placed him on fifth row for the feature. Fading outside the top-10, Winger logged a 20th-place outing.

On Tuesday for a trio of preliminary features, Winger followed up the second-fastest lap in his time trial group with a fifth-to-second run in the 20-lap prelim. He trailed Brandon Overton to the checkers with Max Blair rounding out the podium.

With the remainder of the week shifting to a World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series sanctioned program, Winger scratched from his B-Main on Thursday evening after making slight contact with the wall in his heat race.

After taking part in time trials on Thursday, Mother Nature rolled in midway through the program and cancelled the event.

To wrap up the 52nd annual Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals on Saturday, Ashton received a provisional into the $20,000-to-win finale following a fifth-place finish in his heat and third-place run in his B-Main. Climbing through the field 14 spots in the 50-lap affair, Winger salvaged a 14th-place outing.
