Payton Freeman follows speedweeks to Golden Isles and BRP

On Thursday evening, Payton Freeman returned to the driver’s seat of the Team 22 Inc. No. 22 Late Model at Golden Isles Speedway (Brunswick, Ga.) for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) season opener.

In a field of 50 Late Models for the three-day event, Freeman followed up the 14th-fastest lap in his qualifying group with a fourth-place finish in his heat. Transferring into one of the two consolation races, Payton fell one spot short of a transfer position with a fourth-place outing.

The following night, Payton missed a transfer spot by one car in his heat race and B-Main, ending his evening early.

After timing in 12th-fastest in his group on Saturday, Freeman was collected in a tangle on the opening lap of his heat race that ended his chance at qualifying for the $25,000-to-win Super Bowl of Racing finale.

Rejoining the LOLMDS on Sunday at Bubba Raceway Park (Ocala, Fla.), Payton ran into more bad luck as he broke a driveshaft on the opening lap of his time trial session that prevented him from competing for the remainder of the night.

For the second round of the BRP Winter Nationals on Monday, Payton’s eighth-place finish in his heat race relegated him into the B-Main. Slated to start the consolation event in eighth, Freeman was a scratch to save equipment and prepare for the remainder of speedweeks.
