Winger banks two-win weekend at East Bay, nets $7,500

Ashton Winger has a busy but successful week of racing in Florida aboard his Jeff Mathews Motorsports No. 12 Johnny Doan Plumbing / Recreational Vehicle Services / XR1 Rocket Chassis Super Late Model.

Winger swept the final two rounds of the Crate Racin’ USA Winter Nationals at East Bay Raceway Park, and then scored a pair of podiums in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series competition at Bubba Raceway Park.

“Man, we have an awesome hot rod, and this team is something special. The Crate (Late Model) was on point all weekend at East Bay (Raceway Park), and we won the final two races there,” Winger said. “We then finished third and second at Bubba (Raceway Park), and honestly, I’m a little bummed because the car was a lot better than I was. I made some mistakes that cost us the chance at the win. Still though, can’t say enough about where we are at and just want to thank Jeff Mathews and everyone who supports us.”

Ashton Winger returned to action in the Sunshine State with a visit to East Bay Raceway Park (Gibsonton, Fla.) on Thursday afternoon for the three-day East Bay Winter Nationals.

With 62 Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series entries piled in the pit area for the 47th running of the annual Winter Nationals, Winger clocked in third-fastest in his group before placing third in his heat. Wheeling his way into the top-five in the feature, Ashton passed 11 cars in the 30-lapper to record a fifth-place finish. He followed Cory Hedgecock, Mario Gresham, and Randy Weaver across the line with Hayden Cardwell in fifth.

On Friday, Ashton followed up the second-fastest qualifying lap in his group with a runner-up performance in his heat race. Starting the feature in eighth, Winger tracked down early pacesetter Andy Nezworski on the lap 22 and led the final eight circuits to claim his first win of the season and $2,500 prize. He finished ahead of Nezworski, Hayden Cardwell, Cory Hedgecock, and Austin Yarbrough.

For the finale on Saturday, Winger secured his spot into the main event with a heat race triumph. Leading flag-to-flag in the 50-lap affair, Ashton cruised to his second win in as many nights, which came ahead of Doug Horton, Hayden Cardwell, Cory Hedgecock, and Clinton Hersh. The $5,000 victory elevated his weekend earnings to $7,500.

On Sunday, Ashton joined the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) at Bubba Raceway Park (Ocala, Fla.) for the opening round of the BRP Winter Nationals. With a third-place finish in his heat race placing him on the fifth row for the $10,000-to-win A-Main, Winger advanced forward six spots to cross the line in third. He stood alongside Ricky Thornton Jr. and Max Blair on the podium.

After topping the 39-car field on Monday to claim the Allstar Performance fast time award, Winger outran Ricky Thornton Jr. in his heat to pick up the win. Improving on his third-place finish on Sunday, Ashton recorded a runner-up performance in the feature, which came behind Jonathan Davenport with Dennis Erb Jr. rounding out the podium.
