Mack McCarter runner-up in prelims at Volusia; Jensen double dips in 602
Jensen Ford piloted the Jim Beeman Lumber / West End Package Store / McCarter Brothers Racing No. 71 Tennessee Homemade Wines / Hidden Valley Cattle Ranch / MasterSbilt Race Car to a pair of 602 Late Model victories during the 2023 edition of the Sunshine Nationals over the weekend at Volusia Speedway Park.
Mack McCarter added a second-place finish in 604 Late Model competition on Friday.
“Man, we had a hot rod all weekend with the McCarter Brothers Racing No. 71. I haven’t done just a ton of 602 Crate Late Model stuff, but things went about as good as we could’ve hoped. I hate to see Saturday’s final race rained out because I think we had a real good shot there, but you can’t control the weather,” Ford said. “Mack had a great run with a second-place finish in the 604 (Crate Late Model) division, and I’m looking forward to joining him in Crate Racin’ USA action at East Bay (Raceway Park) this week.”
Jensen Ford entered the McCarter Brothers Racing #71 MasterSbilt into action at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) for the 602 Late Model portion of the Sunshine Nationals.
Ford started off night one with a bang, by setting a new track record for 602 Late Models with a lap of 17.935 in his group. Jensen started the 15-lap main event from the pole position and led all laps en route to the $1,000 payday. Jensen outran David Showers Jr. and Jordan Koehler to the checkered flag.
Meanwhile, with 67 604 Late Models in competition on Thursday, Mack McCarter qualified 10th in his group aboard his McCarter Farms No. 51 MasterSbilt, which handed him the fifth-starting spot for the 20-lap main event. McCarter slipped spots in the $1,500-to-win event to finish eighth.
With another preliminary night on Friday, Jensen was once again fastest out of 18 cars in his group which placed him on the pole for the second $1,000 feature of the week. Ford quickly pulled away from the field and paced the field to secure his second victory in two nights.
For another $1,500 preliminary feature on Friday, McCarter found himself with the fifth-starting spot once again. Reversing last night's results, Mack gained three positions in the 20-lap main event to finish runner-up. He trailed Donald McIntosh while Rye Faulk completed the Top-3.
Saturday's finale at Volusia Speedway Park was cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled.
