Thornton Jr. scores fifth-place finish in Wrisco Winternationals at East Bay

On Monday afternoon, Ricky Thornton Jr. was one of 70 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) entries on hand at East Bay Raceway Park (Gibsonton, Fla.) for the Wrisco Winternationals. After losing Tuesday’s program to wet weather, Thornton Jr. followed up the fourth-fastest time in his group on Wednesday with a second-place finish in his heat. With $7,000 on the line in the feature, Ricky clawed forward two spots to register a fifth-place finish. He trailed Brandon Sheppard, Ashton Winger, Tyler Erb, and Kyle Bronson to the checkers.

On Thursday, Ricky edged his way main event with the third-and-final transfer spot in his heat race. Starting in 18th, Thornton Jr. was the first retiree of the race on the fourth circuit.

In a field of 74 cars on Friday, Thornton Jr. posted a third-place finish in his heat, which positioned him on the seventh row for the $12,000-to-win A-Main. Improving four spots in the 40-lap affair, Ricky recorded a 10th-place finish.

For the Wrisco Winternationals finale on Saturday, Ricky followed up the 10th-fastest time in his group with a third-place finish in his heat. With $15,000 on the line in the feature, Thornton Jr. climbed seven positions to cross the line in seventh.

Ricky is tied for fourth in the latest LOLMDS point standings.
