Ricky Thornton Jr
Thornton attends Knoxville Nationals
After testing the waters in a 410 Sprint Car, Ricky Thornton Jr. returned to the Super Late Model ranks over the weekend for the 20th annual Knoxville Nationals at the prestigious Knoxville (IA) Raceway.
Unable to find his footing all weekend, Thornton was able to qualify for Friday's preliminary feature after missing a transfer spot on Thursday due to bad vibrations in a brand new car. With a $7,000 payday up for grabs, Ricky recorded an 18th-place outing.
Rolling off 23rd for Saturday night’s $50,000-to-win Knoxville Nationals finale, Ricky was forced to pull off with three laps remaining in the 75-lapper with a broken power steering line. He was scored 19th in the final rundown.
Despite the rough weekend, Thornton claimed a $10,000 payday for leading regular season points and clinching a spot into the Big Four playoffs. He will be one of four drivers competing in a seven-race battle for the $200,000 title.
