Thornton records fourth-place finish in Mountain Moonshine Classic
After losing Thursday’s Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, S.C.) to an unexpected storm, Ricky Thornton Jr. followed the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) to Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.) on Friday for the two-day Mountain Moonshine Classic. In a field of 47 cars, Thornton jumped up one spot in his heat race to pick up the eight-lap victory. Starting the $5,000-to-win preliminary feature in second, Ricky dropped five positions to finish seventh.
On Saturday afternoon, Ricky’s fourth-to-second run in his heat race positioned him on the third row for the $50,000-to-win main event. Inching forward one spot in the 60-lap affair, Thornton notched a fourth-place finish, which came behind Chris Madden, Jonathan Davenport, and Brandon Overton with Mike Marlar coming in fifth.
Ricky sits in fourth in the latest LOLMDS point standings.
