Pair of runner-up finishes in Eldora prelims

With the 124-car field split into two groups for a pair of $12,000-to-win preliminary features, Ricky secured his spot into the A-Main with an eighth-to-second run in his heat race. Inching forward three spots in the 25-lap affair, Thornton Jr. notched a second-place finish behind Jonathan Davenport with Bobby Pierce rounding out the podium.
Rolling off on the second row for his heat race later that night, Thornton’s second-place finish placed him on the fourth row for the $1,002,022-to-win Eldora Million. He was credited with a 22nd-place outing after pulling on lap 48.
On Friday afternoon as the 28th annual Dirt Late Model Dream got underway with a pair of prelims, Ricky laid down the third-fastest time in his group before placing third in his heat. With $12,000 on the line in the feature, Thornton Jr. found speed on bottom late as he raced to a runner-up finish, which came behind Brandon Overton.
With his finish in prelims placing him on the front row of his heat on Saturday night, Thornton recorded a fifth-place finish but already had a provisional secured so he scratched from his B-Main. Starting the $128,000-to-win Dirt Late Model Dream 19th, Ricky was running in 18th when light rain picked up on lap 14 and forced officials to postpone the remainder of the 100-lapper to September 7th.
