Ricky Thornton Jr. marches to third-place finish at PRP

Kicking off his Labor Day weekend with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS), Ricky Thornton Jr. invaded Portsmouth Raceway Park (Portsmouth, Ohio) on Saturday afternoon for the Pepsi River Days Rumble 50. After coming one spot shy of a transfer position in his heat with a fifth-place finish, Ricky secured his spot into the $15,000-to-win A-Main with a third-place finish in his heat. Rolling off 19th, Thornton Jr. took an early pit stop on lap 13 but charged from the tail to register an impressive third-place finish. He followed Tim McCreadie and Devin Moran across the line with Tyler Erb and Jimmy Owens rounding out the Top-5. (Heath Lawson photo)

After Sunday’s Hillbilly 100 at Tyler County Speedway (Middlebourne, W.V.) rained out, Thornton Jr. and the SSI Motorsports crew trekked to Eldora Speedway (Rossburg, Ohio) for the Baltes Classic. In a field of 33 Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS) entries, Ricky’s heat race win placed him third on the starting grid for the feature. With $5,000 on the line, Thornton Jr. slid into the lead on the 15th circuit and was running out front in the final five laps when he suffered a broken radiator hose.

Ricky remains in seventh in the latest LOLMDS point standings.
