Rob VanMil Remains Undefeated at BRRP

By Mike Spieker

GLYNDON, Minn. – A season high 72 race teams were checked into Buffalo River Race Park for Sunday night racing at the semi-banked quarter-mile oval.

Rob VanMil picked up his third IMCA modified win to remain unbeaten at Buffalo River. The Barnesville driver started seventh on the starting grid before moving into the top three by lap six.

At the midpoint of the race, VanMil settled into second behind race leader, Michael Greseth.

Greseth looked to have the race in hand in the closing stages, but the veteran driver made a rare mistake coming to the white flag. Exiting turn four, Greseth spun his No. 17 machine, opening the door for VanMil to take the lead.

VanMil jumped at the opportunity and led defending track champion, Michael Johnson, to the checkered flag.

“The track was awesome. We had multiple grooves to run on,” said VanMil in victory lane. “It’s too bad Michael [Greseth] lost it over there in turn four. It was fixing to be a good finish.”

Luke Johnson backed up his win Friday night at Red River Valley Speedway and scored the IMCA sport mod win.

Johnson held off Jesse Skalicky in the final laps to pick up his second win of the season and first at Buffalo River.

“I was just running around the bottom. I knew that was the preferred line,” said Johnson. “With about four laps to go I really started to hear somebody behind me and I figured it was Jesse [Skalicky]. I just had to hit my marks and be patient.”

Kevin Thomas Sr. claimed the NLSA lightning sprint feature. The Alabama native held off Saturday’s winner in Greenbush, Minn., Presley Truedson, to get his second win of the season.

Fifteen-year-old Tim Estenson stormed through the field in the INEX legend feature to pick up his second win of the season at BRRP. The Fargo driver started 12th on the grid before claiming the lead. Once out front, Estenson held off Bismarck drivers Dauntae and Preston Martin.

Torey Fischer picked up a popular win in the IMCA hobby stocks, while Brady Moore was the IMCA sport compact feature winner. Gavin Edinger picked up the slingshot win.

Racing continues next Sunday evening at Buffalo River Race Park starting at 6p.m.
