GARY STUHLER SCORES SEASON THIRD LATE MODEL TRIUMPH IN NON STOP FASHION

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 22) - With a lot of good years left in his stellar racing career, Gary Stuhler hammered all the way under the green flag Saturday evening to score his season third Late Model Triumph on J. G. Cochran Auction Night at Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol. Overall, it was the Greencastle, Pa.’s veteran 134th career win at the track.

“We’ve been searching a bunch and trying stuff,” Stuhler said. “I have to thank Glenn Elliott for showing up tonight. We put our heads together; my crew and him. We changed some stuff after the heat race and made it a whole lot better. Starting position helped a bunch tonight.”

The other divisions competed in qualifiers for the 9th Annual Small Car Nationals King of the Capitol events scheduled for September 17-18 as Rodney Walls was declared the winner of the Late Model Sportsman feature after a barrage of cautions with Mike Corbin leading taking the Pure Stock lead off the final turn. Gary Proctor led all the way in Hobby Stocks.

When the green flag waved for the 25-lap Late Model feature, Stuhler was off and running from the pole with fourth starter Trever Feathers quickly into the runner up spot over Barry Miller.

Stuhler wasn‘t letting Feathers get close enough to smell his exhaust as he was a straightaway ahead by the halfway mark.

Marvin Winters worked to get past Miller on the 20th lap and put Feathers in his sights. Winters came across the stripe alongside Feathers and a half-length short while Stuhler had already saw the checkered 6.535 seconds earlier. Miller and Anderson completed the top five.

Scott Palmer beat outside pole sitter Rodney on the Late Model Sportsman Qualifier before the first caution waved, the first of an overall ten that marred the feature. Walls beat Palmer on a fourth lap restart to take command and lead three laps before another yellow. Walls commanded a ninth lap restart and a 13th lap when Bobby Beard spun off turn four. From that restart, another full lap could not be completed as Palmer leaped into the lead twice of the four additional tries but the half hour time limit ran out when yet another two cars got together on the front stretch. Walls was declared the winner over Palmer, Paul Cursey, Justin Weaver and Kyle lee. It was his second win in three weeks.

“With Scott there and Cursey, I saw the two #2’s (Weaver and Lee) on the board,” Walls said. “Scott was really getting me on those last couple starts. He definitely had a better car on the starts, we got together there. I don’t like to do that. Those guys are awesome to race with. I hate to have it cut short, but we’ll take it any way we can get it.”

Brandon Churchey led the opening three laps of the Pure Stock Qualifier over Jamie Zentmyer who took the lead on lap four. Mike Corbin challenged and took second away from Churchey on the sixth lap as he began to close on Zentmyer and was on his bumper the last half of the race. On the final lap Corbin rounded the final turns and had enough momentum to power ahead and lead the final half straightaway for his season seventh win. Mike Potts ended third over Chris Ebersole and Churchey.

“That was one of those hero or zero moves,” Corbin said. ”My hats off to Jamie; he raced me clean and from where I was sitting, it was one hell of a race. I hope the fans enjoyed it.”

Lined up from the heat race finishes, Travis Horan and Matt Wampler occupied the pole for the Hobby Stock Qualifier as a three wide start found Wampler contacting the fence off the second turn. Gary Proctor moved to the outside pole and took the restart lead over Horan and continued to lead the distance. Horan tried his best every lap to unseat Proctor but trailed by a length at the checkered as Proctor scored win number nine.
