Unfortunate Incident Ends Clay Sprau’s Run at First Career Win

26 Promotions – Casa Grande, AZ – (May 1, 2018) – Clay Sprau was a half-lap away from scoring his first career win Saturday night at Central Arizona Speedway.
“We started off the night with a high pill draw that lined us up sixth for our heat,” said Sprau. “It took a few laps for me to make it up to third and by that time the front two had built up a pretty good lead. The car was really good, so we made some minor adjustments, but I didn’t want to change too much for the main.”
Sprau’s run from sixth to third in his heat was enough to secure the pole as the sixth and final car to make the feature invert.
“It took about three attempts before we actually got the main underway and just about every time we’d catch lap traffic the caution would come out and stack the field back up,” he explained. “The car took off like a rocket on restarts, so I wasn’t too concerned about defending going into turn one.”
Sprau’s night would end in heartbreaking fashion as he led the field out of turn one on the final lap.
“We had taken the white flag, and as I caught lap traffic a car spun in front of me, and I had nowhere to go,” explained Sprau. “I clipped him with my right rear and ended up flipping three or four times down the backstretch, ending our night.”
Sprau exited the car on his own and escaped without any injuries.
“It was absolutely heartbreaking getting that close to winning my first race to have it end with my first flip,” he said. “I have to thank the Central Arizona Speedway track safety crew for getting to me quickly. Thank you to my girlfriend Dee, my family at Streaker Racing and to everyone that came up to me in the pits for all the support.”
Sprau plans to return to action on May 12th at Central Arizona Speedway.
