Schott Leads USRA Charge At Longdale with Shebester and Kenny Earning Wins
Bryan Hulbert – LONGDALE, Okla. (October 23, 2020) Wrapping up the first of a two night run at Longdale Speedway, three divisions took to the western Oklahoma clay with Minnesota’s Lucas Shott taking top honors with the USRA Modifieds while Steven Shebester topped Champ 305 Sprints, and Brandon Kenny grabbed the win with the Limited Modifieds.
Caution on the first attempt of the USRA Modified A-Feature, Oklahoma’s Derek Ramirez took off the with the lead both times. Nearly three deep with Lucas Schott and R.C. Whitwell on Lap 2, the No. 69 rolled the hub off the fourth turn on Lap 4 to take the point.
Asked about the battle for the lead, Schott said, “R.C. and Derek are two of the fastest guys here, so to beat both of them my first time here is pretty cool. I just knew that within the first three or four laps ws going to be our best shot.”
Steadily pulling away through the remainder of the A-Feature, the now 15 time winner in 2020 dominated by 4.662-seonds in his inaugural visit to Longdale Speedway. Ramirez held on for second with Whitwell closing fast on the final lap. Jon Herring, Jr. crossed fourth with Vince Lucas in fifth.
Leading through the half-way point with the USRA Limited Modifieds, the No. 09 of Robert Elliott set sail on the field. Through several cautions, the Clinton, Okla. shoe was untouchable until mechanical issues sidelined him on Lap 12.
Giving Brandon Kenny the point, another caution on Lap 14 provided drivers a shot at the No. 33b with the caution following again as the No. 11 of Howard and No. 50 of Poulson came together off the fourth turn.
Taking one last shot at making it Lap 20, the race for the lead was three wide into the first and second turn with Kaleb Roach taking the top stop. Fighting back with the slide job on Lap 17, Kenny reclaimed the lead and ran to a 1.526-second advantage in a borrowed car. Kaleb Roach held on for second with Troy Bynum climbing from 10th to complete the night’s podium. Jeffrey Kaup and Dylon Bergeron made the top five
Giving chase the first lap in the Champ 305 Sprint Car A-Feature, Steven Shebester worked by the Jordan Knight with a high line pass to complete Lap No. 2. Pursued by Jake Martens, the 360-Civil No. 27b found the runner-up spot two laps later. Chasing into slower traffic on Lap 8, Martens was able to close slightly but not enough as Shebester kept just over a second advantage.
Caution on Lap 11 for Weston Miller, the restart put Martens in the hunt as the leaders found traffic with six laps to run. Pulling close, but not able to get by, the Riverside Salvage No. 16 of Shebester who took the checkered flag with 1.248-seconds to spare. Jake Martens, Whit Gastineau, Brandon Anderson, and Ryan Timms completed the top five.
Racing action continues at the three-eights mile oval on Saturday, October 24 with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products replacing the Champ Sprints.
