Dereck Ramirez tops Silver Dollar Nationals at I-80 Speedway

Dereck Ramirez scored his third United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) win of the season at Saturday’s 10th Annual Imperial Silver Dollar Nationals.

Ramirez drove his Ramirez Motorsports No. 4r Koda Services/ Boom-Test Well Service/ Raw Truck Wash/ Hughes Race Car/ Cornett Racing Engine Modified to the $3,000 payday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.

“We’ve been good all year and this is just another confidence booster heading into the second half of the season,” Dereck added. “I have to thank everyone that supports this team. Thanks to all the fans that came out too.”

On Friday to kick off the Silver Dollar Nationals, Ramirez scored a fourth-place finish in his heat, which positioned him eighth on the starting grid for the $3,000-to-win A-Main. Clawing forward one spot in the 30-lap affair, Dereck notched a seventh-place finish.

With polesitter Jake Timm setting the pace early, Ramirez disposed of third-starting Calvin Iverson near the halfway point and set his sights on the race-leader. Sliding ahead of Timm for the lead on lap 25, Dereck led the final five circuits to capture the win ahead of Timm, Jason Hughes, Tanner Mullens, and Terry Phillips.

“I was trying to work the bottom and I showed him [Jake Timm] my nose a little early and he moved down,” Ramirez explained. “I think the top was faster the whole time, I was just showing him my nose to see if I could bait him to move down. When he did, I made the move around the top and it worked.”

The road warriors of the USMTS will invade Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, this Tuesday through Thursday, July 28-30, for Mod Mania. Tuesday’s event boasts a $2,000 top prize before competitors chase a $3,000 winner’s check on Wednesday. The action culminates with a $4,000-to-win program on Thursday.

Dereck sits in second in the latest USMTS National Championship point standings.
