Tom Berry Jr Tops Sunday Night Racing at Benton County Speedway

Vinton, Iowa: For the first time in 2020, race fans were allowed to attend the racing action at the Benton County Speedway “The Bullring” in Vinton, Iowa. A good crowd attended the points racing season opener that saw 121 race car drivers take part in the action on Sunday night.

The headliner of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modified main event. Recently relocated Tommy Berry Jr. from North Dakota, who is now an Iowa resident found the “Bullring” ¼ mile track to his liking on Sunday night. Berry took the green flag from the 7th starting position and quickly shot into second and hounded the car of Troy Cordes. On the 13th lap Cordes slid out of the groove in turn four and gave Berry the opening he was looking for. Berry shot into the lead and drove on to the win ahead of Joel Rust and Cordes.

The IMCA Sportmod main event on Sunday night belonged to Speedy Bray, Brayton Carter from Oskaloosa. Carter took the lead before one lap was completed and went on to lead the entire 20 laps. Ben Chapman advanced from his 10th position start to finish a strong second ahead of Joe Docekal.

The IMCA Stock Car feature turned into a family affair on Sunday night as the father and son duo of Damon and Dallon Murty swapped the lead several times during the main event. Dallon overtook his father just before the white flag was waved and went on to score a hard fought win. With the elder Murty, Damon, crossing under he checkers in second it was Scooter Dulin picking up the third spot.

The Hobby Stocks provided the fans with lots of action, when the checkered flag waved it was Nathan Ballard making his way to victory lane. Ballard raced to the win ahead of Kaden Reynolds and Jake Benischek.

Thew Sport Compact main was also a wild action packed event. Nate Chandler held off a late race charge by Jaycee Floyd to score the win.

Veteran racer Don Erger raced from his pole position start and led the Micro Mod feature flag to flag on Sunday night. Erger took the win over Chad Dugan and Cole McNeal.

The American Iron Racing Series also raced on Sunday night with an impressive field of 15 throw back type race cars in action. Matt Hudspeth drove his 1970 Olds Cutlass to win.

Racing action will continue on Sunday, June 14th at the “Bullring” located on the Benton County Fairgrounds in Vinton, Iowa with hot laps at 4:30 pm and racing scheduled to take the green at 5 pm.
