Dellinger Wins Final Super Sportsman Victory of 2019

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: How a driver ends a racing season is as important as how he or she begins one. It’s all about momentum and confidence.

Scott Dellinger didn’t have a lot of either throughout the 2019 season, but he has changed that in a big way the last three weeks at BAPS Motor Speedway and will carry that into the offseason preparation for 2020.

The late-season surge continued Saturday night. Dellinger, who captured the Sportsman 100 two weeks ago, added another high-dollar score to his list of accomplishments by winning the Dirty 30. The win was worth $3,000.

“I have to thank all of my guys for putting in the time all year,” Dellinger said after his third win of the season. “We had an exceptional year, even though it didn’t feel like that throughout the season.

“It’s never like that when you are chasing somebody all year long. I was there last year, and Kenny [Edkin] was there to beat this year. Congratulations to those guys on the championship.”

Chasing Kenny Edkin has been a theme for everybody in the pit area this season, and it was no different in this one.

Edkin lined up on the pole after setting quick time and winning the Cash Dash. Meanwhile, Dellinger was fourth and had to bide his time getting to the front.

It didn’t take long. Three caution periods in the first 17 circuits kept the field bunched up and didn’t allow Edkin to speed away.

That’s all Dellinger needed. The 2018 track champion stalked the leader and pulled the trigger on a low move through the third corner on Lap 20 to wrestle the top spot away.

“I told Ben [Engle] we would be walking in cotton at the end of the night if we pulled this one off,” Dellinger said. “There were a few times we were heading for the fence, inside and outside.

“Once we found a rhythm, we started to go. Tracking down Kenny is no easy feat. He was running on a rail around there, and I just found something that worked for our car.”

The race was far from over. Russ Mitten started 22nd and carved his way to the front on the top side and was starting to challenge the leaders.

Dellinger was counting on it. With Mitten charging, it allowed the leader to open up a small cushion, but the advantage was wiped out by two late cautions, including a red flag on Lap 28 for Luke Deatrick.

Edkin took one last shot at the win on the final lap, but Dellinger was up to task. He nailed his line coming through the final two corners and took the win over Edkin and Mitten at the finish.

“The bottom was going away,” Dellinger said. “I knew Russell came a long way, and I saw him up there and knew he was coming. I was hoping he would be racing Kenny and take him off me.

“During the last red flag, I was burning up in that car. It's hot sitting on that brake rotor cooking underneath your behind and having the motor in front of you. It takes your mental focus away a little bit.

“I saw Kenny flying in there on the last lap, and I knew he was going to give it all he had. I knew if I hit my marks down there, I would be OK.”

Edkin set quick time for the 23-car Super Sportsman field with a lap of 17.499. He also won the Cash Dash worth $400. Edkin, Dellinger, and Jay Fannasy were heat winners.

Ben Whitaker started on the pole and won an entertaining 20-lap Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event.

There were three lead changes over the race distance. Whitaker led the opening circuit, with Chase Billet taking the spot away on Lap 2.

Travis Mease, who started second on the grid, took his turn at the front on Lap 5. Whitaker stayed in contention and got past Mease for the lead on Lap 12 and held on the rest of the way.

Joe Lusk started eighth and came up to second. Mease, Joey Hoffer, and Billet completed the top five. Whitaker and Mease won heat races.

In Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stock action, Brian Walls wired the field to take the win in the 20-lap event.

Ryan Smith started fifth and came to second. Jasen Geesaman, Kyle Saylor, and Greg Diehl completed the top five. Walls and Geesaman won heat races.

Jeff Gill earned the win in the 25-lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature. He beat Sam Rial to the finish.

Rial led the first 19 circuits, before Gill took over on Lap 20. Gill led the final six circuits and capped the season with a win. Donnie Broderick, John Wright, and Richard Daughtrey completed the top five.
