Mullens tops USRA Mods; C. Smith, Kinderknecht, D. Smith, B. Davis card wins.

Fall is in full swing, but racing has remained fierce at 81 Speedway as the conclusion to the 2020 race season quickly approaches. Five divisions were on tap to do battle on Saturday, the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified Division headlining the nights action. Joining them were the HeyGlassman.com Stock Cars, the Chunky Poodle Rookie Modifieds, the Gladiators in the Late Models, and the lightning fast Mod Lites.

In HeyGlassman.com Stock Car action, Clint Smith interrupted Scott Miller’s hot streak, taking home his third win of the year, and stretching out his point lead over George Ramey in the process. Smith’s win did not come easy as he was challenged the entire way. First up was third starting Miller who hounded the backside of the No. 12c machine through the race’s halfway point. A rare miscue by Miller in the No. 1 machine saw his race hopes dashed after getting sideways then making contact with the No. 76 of Ramey. The resulting caution flag sent the No. 1 to the rear of the field, and gave Joey Richmond, Austin Ramey, and George Ramey all a shot at the No. 12c on the ensuing restart. George Ramey made the strongest challenge with two laps to go, diving under Smith through turns 3 & 4, but trouble on the last lap through 1 & 2 saw Ramey relegated to 4th when the checker flag flew. Clint Smith, Joey Richmond, Austin Ramey, George Ramey, and Ray Ketner composed the race’s top 5, while Austin Ramey and Scott Miller picked up heat race wins.

The Mod Lite division A-feature once again went to Justin Kinderknecht, putting himself back in the winner circle after a rare 2nd place finish to Kansas City, Missouri’s Dillon Raffurty the week before. Kinderknecht drove to a big lead and was un-challenged for much of the race until a late pair of cautions gave Bentley, KS driver Tommy Carter a couple of cracks at the win. When the checkers flew it was Kinderknecht out front with Carter, Mike Kennedy, Chad Shartzer, and Clayton Hogie all in tow. Boone, Iowa’s Mike Kennedy and Kinderknecht claimed heat race wins.

Beloit, KS driver Daniel Smith notched his first win of the season during Late Model action, victory eluding the No. 92s on a couple of occasions earlier this season. Starting on the outside of the front row next to Chris Kratzer, Smith was able to jump out to an early lead at the drop of the green. A scary situation three laps in saw the red flag way for the No. 18 of Don Foster in turn 1. Once the race was back under way, Smith remained on point and drove away from a three-car battle that developed between Kratzer, Dustin Bolster, and Dusty Leonard. Leonard drove his No. 7D machine under the B1 of Bolster for the 3rd spot, and immediately began to attack Kratzer for second. Kratzer was determined to keep the spot and battled door to door with the 7D for multiple laps, but eventually Leonard prevailed and started to drive away after the races midway point. Largely unchallenged for the last half of the event, Smith crossed the checkers first, Leonard second, Kratzer third, Bolster fourth, and point leader Adam Popp completed the top 5. Heat race wins on the evening went to Leonard and D. Smith.

The Chunky Poodle Rookie Modified feature was as wild as ever, cautions flags flying and side by side racing taking place throughout the field the entire 15 lap distance. At the end it was Wichita’s Brett Davis who led wire to wire picking up his second win on the season. Jim Roney made a late race charge to try and challenge for the lead, driving his No. 54 machine from 11th to finish in the runner up spot. Hard Charger Walt Brookshire went 15th to 3rd, Ryan Quiring finished 4th, and Dillon Moler completed the top 5. Newly wed Austin Krogmeier claimed the nights B-feature victory while Quiring, Rustin Wilson, and Fred Freeman all picked up heat race wins.

The 2020 race season has been fruitful for Wichita, KS driver Tanner Mullens, picking up 4 feature wins and Grant Junghans Rookie of the Year honors during Summit Racing Equipment USMTS National Championship fuel by Casey’s action all summer long, as well as a handful of wins at miscellaneous events and tracks throughout the Midwest. Saturday night proved no different, as Mullens made a rare weekly racing series start at his hometown track and drove his No. 02 machine to the win. Beating pole sitter Jon Herring Jr. into turn one at the drop of the green, Mullens brought fellow USMTS competitor and another local favorite Tyler Davis with him, Davis pacing Mullens through the races opening laps. Woodward, Oklahoma’s Cole Traugott also proved to be fast from his 5th place starting spot immediately challenging for a place inside the top 3, battling hard with Herring Jr in the No. 96. Five laps in the top four started to create some distance on the field, while 10th starting Jake Nightingale had worked his way into the top 5. Cautions began to play a factor in the race, with restarts resulting in hard-nosed racing and mishaps inside the top 5. A mid-race restart saw Traugott and Davis squabble off turn two. Traugott’s No. 9 machine drifted up the racetrack underneath the No. 65 of Davis, pinching the USMTS Rookie contender into the outside retaining wall off turn 2. Traugott streaked away from Davis while Nightingale, who had driven by Herring Jr on the restart, took his turn battling the No. 65 machine driving to the inside at the entry of turn 3, before problems for Ross Shipman slowed the field once again. On the ensuing restart Mullens and Traugott paced the field, Davis and Nightingale continued to race for 3rd, and Herring Jr. ran fifth. A lap later Herring Jr. slowed off turn four with apparent mechanical issues but kept his car rolling while the field drove by and exited the speedway at the inside of turn one, keeping the green lights on. The next lap by Davis and Nightingale continued their battle over the third spot. Davis entered turn one on the cushion and turned his car down the racetrack attempting to diamond the corner and pull away from the No. 3J machine. At the same time Nightingale had entered turn one on the bottom, his machine drifting up the track making contact with Davis’ left rear sending both drivers around. After both drivers exited the speedway to the hot pit area, neither driver returned before the race continued. The final portion of the race saw Mullens and Traugott hold serve at the front, while track point leader Brendon Gemmill polished off his hard charge of the night driving from 14th to 3rd, 7th starting Lewis Jackson finished 4th, and T.J. Tolan completed the top 5. Halstead, KS driver Brian Franz won the lone B-feature, and the evening’s 4 heat race wins were claimed by Kenny Sweet, Tyler Davis, Brandon Massey, and Jon Herring Jr.
