06/03/2016 (Auburn MI) Another beautiful Friday night at Tri-City Motor Speedway kicked off the month of June. Bone and Bailey Insurance was the entertainment sponsor as 105 entries were on hand across the six divisions of race cars. TCMS also introduced a new way to enjoy the show for the spectators with Driver Bingo. Folks coming to enjoy the show received a bingo card with driver’s numbers for a chance to win prizes.
The Mini Wedge cars were back in action for the second time in 2016. This new division, allowing for children between 6-14 years of age to race and learn on-track etiquette saw six youngsters ready to race their 5hp cars. The winner of the opening night feature, #13 Cassie Witherspoon, would start on the pole for the 10 lap feature. She would lead a handful of opening laps before 12-year old #7 Jonny Staszak would take his turn at the front. He would cruise to the victory in a very entertaining race. #3 Mason Clements would finish in the runner-up position followed by #36 Jennifer Young in the third position. Staszak also won his heat race.
The Thornton Brothers Septic Service Bomber Stock Division has been exceptionally competitive in 2016 with just about every driver having won a feature event in 2016. This closeness in competition has created some fantastic racing. #77 Stacie Staszak and #13 Preston DeShano led the field to the green flag for the 12 lap feature. Staszak would be able to lead the first five laps as she was fighting off DeShano, #13 Nick Putman, Point leader #09 Jack Freese, and heat race winner #21 Andy Koczenasz. Koczenasz would wrestle the lead away from Staszak on lap five and would not look back on his way to his second feature win of the season. The top five finishers were DeShano, Staszak, Putman, and Freese.
Twenty Three Melling Select Late Models started the 25-lap main event to see if anyone but #6m Dona Marcoullier could win. Marcoullier, who won his heat race earlier in the night, would start the feature from the 11th spot. Heat race winner #24 Joe Pomeroy and #11x Ryan Lanphierd would bring the large field to the green flag. Pomeroy had the field covered for the first seven laps before Lanphierd would take over the lead. Lanphierd, who almost won his first feature of his career the prior week, tried to get out as far ahead of the field as possible. However, Marcoullier would not be denied. Patience would pay off once again for the Houghton Lake driver as he would use the high side of turn two to pass both Pomeroy and Lanphierd on lap twelve. He would immediately pull away for his fourth feature and continuing his streak of being unbeaten on nights he arrives. #19 Derrick Hilliker, who made a late charge from 15th, would finish second. #9 Isaac Wolfgang, #6r Carl Ries, and #21 David Hilliker completed the top five. #4t Andrew Terrill, Ohio Driver #6* Graeme Short, #24 Alex Hupert, Pomeroy, and #0h Phil Hendershot completed the top ten. #3 Kyle Roberts would win his heat race.
The Elgin Pro Stocks have had a number of feature races where aggression has been at an all time high. With eighteen cars starting the feature, it didn’t take long before that aggression would collect some top cars. #27 Rob Westergard and Munger driver #9s Marc Super paced the field to the start of the main event. Westergard captured the opening lap. #99 Rick Beauchamp would take the lead away going into turn one on the second lap and get sideways in the bottom groove of turn two. This would create a pile up that collected point runner up and two time champion #M65 Rick Spencer, and rookies #7r Dave Newcomb and #28 Jared Rizer. Once the red flag was lifted, the field went back to racing. #71 Timmy Near would lead the next five laps. Point Leader #14 Nate Jones would drive through traffic from his tenth place starting position the runner up spot. However, Near would be forced to pull off the track early with mechanical issues. He would end up finishing 14th. This handed the lead to Jones. 12th place starter #57 TJ Gilbert also fought his way through the field to end up on the back bumper of Jones for the closing laps. Both drivers put on a heck of a show as they battled each other for the race win. It would be Jones prevailing in dramatic fashion as he crossed the finish line on lap twenty with his motor blowing up in flames. Behind Jones, it was Gilbert, #01 Randy Radabaugh, Super, #69 Nate Murphy, Westergard, #26 Mike Vandermark, #21d Darren Mularz, #91s Gary Shank, and #K11 Kendall Morrison. Beauchamp and Shank were heat race champs.
20w AJ Ward missed last week’s show but came back on Friday night as the co-point leader with #33 Todd Matheson in the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified division. Both drivers would start in row five in the 20-lap feature. #27 Matt Szecsodi and #776 Rusty Zeigler would bring the 20-drivers to the green flag. Szecsodi would beat the field to lap one before he would spin in turn two. He would restart at the rear of the field. Zeigler would lead the next two laps before heat race winner Ward would miraculously grab the lead on lap four. He was unchallenged the remaining 16 laps for his fifth feature win of the year. #68 Heath Grizzle, #7d Myron DeYoung, #511 Chaz Pray, and B-Main winner #42 Craig Vance were the top five finishers. Zeigler, #4s Toby Steele, heat race winner #19 Joe Fowler, Matheson, and third heat race winner Szecsodi had the remaining top ten spots.
18d David Lester, #15.2 Robert Cunningham, #M57 Mike Currie, and #17 Chuck Kaake won qualifying races in the Suspension MAXX Street Stock division as the narrowed down the 27 that checked into the pits to the twenty that would start the 20-lap feature. Pole sitter #50 Jake Thompson took off to lead the opening laps before Currie would catch him. Both would put on a great battle for the top position for a number of laps swapping the lead between them. With them racing hard, it allowed for last year’s point runner up, #x5 Eric Lake, to catch the lead duo just prior to the halfway point of the event. Once Lake got to the front, he would ride the rim of the track in order to keep his momentum. #15 Andy Kaake would eventually catch Lake but ran out of laps as Lake would win his first circle track feature of 2016. Kaake, #96 Shane Wright, Thompson, and point leader #11 James Jaenicke took home top five positions at the finish. C. Kaake, Cunningham, #21 Dan Engel, #67 Ryan Fitzgerald, and #85 Al Spiekerman rounded out the top 10.
