Third-place finish in Sunshine Nationals prelim
Making a surprise appearance aboard the CVR Race Cars No. 17 Late Model, Riley Hickman was one of 70 Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series entries crammed into the pit area at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) on Friday afternoon for the fifth annual Sunshine Nationals.
With a rainout on Thursday evening forcing officials to restructure the weekend, Hickman raced into his preliminary feature with the 10th-fastest qualifying effort. Moving forward two spots in the 20-lapper, Riley rolled to a third-place finish, chasing Brock Pinkerous and Will Roland to the checkers.
The weekend drew to an early close for Riley on Saturday after a mechanical failure in the right-front shock department forced the Cleveland, Tennessee native to scratch from his consolation race.
