Arie Races on National Level Again

Arie Schouten, 17, of Blair stands in victory lane after winning his heat at the IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa. Schouten competed in the big race of the week on Saturday. Blair High School senior Arie Schouten raced on a national level for the second time this year. Schouten, who competed in the SportMod division of the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa, in September, was invited to compete in the Duel in the Desert last weekend in Las Vegas. “He ran really well,” Scouten’s mother, Leslie Vaughn said. Scouten, 17, was invited to compete after qualifying for the main event at Boone. While Schouten finished in the top four in several of the races over the weekend, he failed to qualify for the main event. More than 70 drivers — mostly from the West Coast — were in Schouten’s division. Vaughn said her son finished two spots out from qualifying for the main race. A damaged hood caused Schouten to hit the wall in his final race of the weekend. “This finished his season,” Vaughn said. Two former NASCAR drivers — Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace — also raced at the dirt track in a different division.
