MWRA Returns to Lakeside & Valley This Weekend

KCK: The Wholesale Batteries USAC MWRA Non Winged Spriht Car Series returns to its roots with a border state showdown this Friday night May 10th at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, and this Saturday night May 11th at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri.

Lakeside History:
For Lakeside Speedway that history goes back all the way to 1955 when the first ever race at the original track located at 92nd & Leavenworth RD in KCK featured the AAA sprint car series, before they ceased operations, passing the baton to USAC in 1956. Over the years since at both the old facility, and the modern Lakeside Speedway, the history and tradition of sprint car racing has continued on now with MWRA since its inception in 2020.

The first race for the MWRA at Lakeside occurred on June 26th 2020 with Lincoln, Nebraskas Don Droud Jr taking the victory in the Mark Burch 1m, and Topeka, Kansas, hot shot Wyatt Burks the Weld Memorial later that season in his WBR/Rumsey Racing 11w. The “Sheriff” Burks, would also “Park it” in victory lane on three more occasions since then in MWRA competition including two Weld Memorial victories in 2022-23.

Riley Kreisel of Warsaw, Missouri, would also win a special event for the MWRA in 2020 at Lakeside , and Jack Wagner of Lone Jack, Mo. would win the only Weld Memorial not taken by Burks under the MWRA banner driving the Jesse Hockett Racing/Wagner Boys Racing 77 in 2021. Previous to the MWRA, the late Jesse Hockett himself, also from Warsaw, shined bright during his career in traditional sprint cars at Lakeside Speedway winning two Ron Shuman Classics on his way to sprint car stardum in the first decade of the new millennium.

Valley History:
Valley Speedway has been one of the top non winged venues in the new millennium, and like Lakeside had hosted 6 MWRA showdowns before the start of the 2024 campaign. On April 6th, Kory Schudy of Battlefield, Missouri, won the lid lifter for the MWRA at Valley Speedway over Jack Wagner, and his brother Samuel Wagner, who finished 2nd and third respectively. Schudy, driving the Jon Sawyer Racing 28, won his first MWRA race at Valley last season, joining Wesley Smith of Nixa, Missouri, Cody Baker of Lone Jack, Xavier Doney, of Odessa, Mo, and California’s Ricky Lewis, who with his victory in 2023 became the first driver not hailing from the Show Me State to win a MWRA showdown at Valley.

Points Leader Walton:
Going into this weekend after the three points paying races won by Schudy, Braydon Cromwell at ECS, and Smith at I-70, the point standings has both some familiar, and not so familiar names in the top 10 in points. Odessa, Missouris, Taylor Walton is the point leader for the MWRA over Burks, Luke Howard of Overland Park, Kansas, Schudy, Camden, Missouris Michael Moore, Raymore, Mo driver Zach Clark, Bonham, Texas, gasser, Kobe Simpson, Texan Junior Parkinson, of Wichita Falls, and Smith tied with fellow Missourian Chad Winfrey of Gladstone to round out the top 10 in points so far. With only 95 points separating the top 10 combatants.

Join us this Friday May 10th at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. Pits open at 5pm, Grandstand at 6, and Hot Laps 7 for the Alex Brown Memorial.

And Saturday night May 11th at Valley Speedway, Grain Valley, Missouri. Pit Gates open at 3. Drivers Meeting 5:10. Grandstand 5, Hot laps 5:30, racing at 6.
