Marcoullier Conquers A.L.M.S. at Winston for $2000 Pay Day
Rothbury, Michigan (Saturday, June 14th, 2014): Last Friday night at the Winston Speedway the Sunoco American Late Model Series (A.L.M.S.) were on hand for their second and final visit of the year at the fast 3/8ths (0.375) mile dirt oval. The program also featured racing from the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks, Factory Stocks / Bombers, Four-Cylinder Warriors, Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks, and Young Guns.
The main event’s began with the 30-lap feature for the UMP DIRTcar Late Models. The defending Sunoco (A.L.M.S.) east champion Brandon Thirlby and two time track champion Tom Sprague Jr. made up the front row. Sprague jumped out to the early lead, however he soon be caught by Thirlby who overtook him for the top spot. However Dona Marcoullier would get a great restart off the last caution, which propelled him to the lead and he was able to go on to get the win.
Marcoullier, 29 from Houghton Lake, Michigan picked up his second win of the year. Thirlby was forced to settle for second. Ryan Vanderveen, Six time & Defending track champion Rich Neiser, and Curtis Roberts rounded out the top five. Thirlby and Sprague were the preliminary heat race winners.
Jeremy Holman and Chuck Smith led the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks out next for their 20-lap main event. It wouldn’t be long until veteran driver Derek Poland was able to work his way to the front for the lead. He would go on from there unchallenged and pick up his second win of the season. The defending UMP DIRTcar National Champion Josh Frye finished second. Chuck Smith, Mike Epplett, and Holman finished off the top five. Poland and Frye were also the two heat winners.
The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds held their 20-lap feature event. The front row consisted of Steve Fairbanks and Stan Dodds. Those two would battle hard for the lead, which Dodds was able to eventually pull out to the lead. He was able to hang on and go the distance all the way to victory lane. The two-time and defending UMP DIRTcar Modifieds Michigan state champion David Mielke was the runner up. Two time and defending track champion Andy Sprague, Fairbanks, and Four-time track champion John McCaul made up the top five. The heat races were won by Steve McClees and Kevin Cavanagh.
The Factory Stocks / Bombers were out next for their 15-lap feature, which was led out by Mel Whitten and Mike Fekken. After several cautions and the dust had settled, it was Dan Wilson Jr. making the visit to the winner’s circle.
The 35-year old from Muskegon, Michigan earned his fourth win of the year in his A&A Manufacturing sponsored car. Josh Grabe took the second place finish. Defending track champion Robbie Sternberg, Jerid Bisson, and Fekken capped off the top five. Wilson and Grabe were the heat winners.
The Young Guns were led out by Chelsey Allen and Madison Crane for their 10-lap A-Main. Trent Musk wasted no time in jumping out front of the field and he went on to go all the way from green to checker for the win. This marked the 16-year olds seventh victory of the year in his Wylie Electric / Honda. He finished just ahead of Morgan Smith. Kristina Johnson, Crane, and Hedi Barnhard rounded out the top five.
The Four-Cylinder Warriors entered the speedway for a 12-lap main event. Brian Hammond and Shane Wiggins were on the front row to get things started. However when it was all said and done it was Chuck Peterson II powering his way up to the front and holding on to pick up his second win of the season.
Peterson, a 24-year old Ionia, Michigan native drove the Bert’s Auto Glass / Caviler. Mike Goodwin picked up the second place finish. Wiggins, Buck Spencer, and Randy Larabee completed the top five. The Lone Heat race was won by Goodwin.
Finally, the Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks held a 12-lap feature. James Buckner and Chad Tomczak were on row one. Tomczak took the early advantage, but he was soon caught by 2011 track champion Paul Namey. However Namey was forced back to the pits after being involved in a caution. The lead was then given to Brian Carson, who was able to charge ahead for the win.
Carson scored his fourth victory of the year in his Reliable Towing machine. Second place was taken by Tomczak. Rich Lieb, Namey, and Buckner made up the top five. Namey was the winner of the lone heat race.
This Saturday June 20th the Winston Speedway will feature another jam packed 7 in 1 show headlined by a Factory Stock / Bomber special presented by Port City Racecars. Also on the show will be the UMP DIRTcar Late Models, UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks, Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks, Four-Cylinder Warriors, and Young Guns. The Pit Gates Open at 3:30p.m., Grandstands Open at 4:30p.m., Practice Starts at 5:30p.m., and Racing Begins at 7:00p.m.
