Pifer Looks to Revive Season After Bumpy Start

MERCER, Pa. – With two races in the books and two hard-luck DNFs, Darren Pifer will look to turn things around this Saturday at Mercer Raceway Park.
While the Pennsylvania track hosted the All Star Circuit of Champions sprint cars this weekend, Pifer was also in action in the Outlaw Sprint Warrior 305ci division, on the card as a support class. Competing against 24 others, three heat races would ensue, culminating with a 20-lap feature race. Pifer started in the fourth spot in his heat race, but fell two spots to finish sixth.
Missing the redraw, the Reynoldsville, Pa. driver was to take the green flag from outside row eight. Fighting the car early and dropping to 21st, he began to move the Niagara Cutter No. 23 forward. A lap 11 yellow would tighten the field back up and give Pifer the opportunity to advance further. He took the 16th spot by a nose at the completion of lap 12, but a hard collision with another car nearly sent Pifer flipping. While the car remained right-side-up, the damage sustained on the J&J machine was too heavy to continue. A ride to the pits via a wrecker gave Pifer a 22nd-place finish on the official score sheet. “We’ve had no luck to start this year off at all,” Pifer chimed in. “Need to get the car better and I need to cut down on my mistakes behind the wheel.” Noting that the coming weekend will mark one year since the fire that burned nearly a quarter of his body, he added, “I’ve never wanted to win a race as bad as I do this weekend.”

Pifer is next scheduled to compete on May 9 at Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pennsylvania in the No. 23 305ci Sprint entry.
