SWEET SPRINGS, Mo. – Riding a streak that gets more impressive every week, Gunner Ramey has finished in the top-ten every race he’s competed in this season, finishing no worse than seventh in seven attempts, all at Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex. Six of those races have been top-five efforts, including two triumphs. The worst and the best of those have come over the past two weeks, finishing seventh on June 20 but following it up with a decisive win this past Saturday.
The first of the two races brought in 14 cars for the restrictor class, with two heats of seven cars apiece. From fifth on the grid of heat one, Ramey pieced together a second-place effort. Going from tenth in the feature race, Ramey looked to charge to the front in hopes of gaining ground on points leader Luke Howard, who started in eleventh. However, the tides would soon turn as Ramey’s No. 28 Impact Signs machine lost power steering and became much tougher to navigate through the turns. Toiling through to a seventh-place finish, ground would still be lost to the second-finishing Howard.
The best way to gain ground on him would be to win a race, so Ramey set out to do just that. With just 11 cars in action, Ramey started the second heat race from the outside front row and went on to win it. Again aligned by point average for the feature grid, Ramey would be going from outside row four, and Howard from inside row five. The pair set a blistering pace through the field and quickly took the lead and second place, respectively. Running down the tail of the field, Ramey navigated the slower traffic ahead like a seasoned pro, winning with a sizable margin behind him. As it stands now, Ramey trails Howard by 66 markers in the points race, Howard with 442 and Ramey in second with 376.
Ramey would like to thank Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps, Sure Coat Powdercoating, Rob Sneed Shorthorns, McKinney Construction, Ramey Dirtworks, Southwest Storage, 8760 Service Group, Rod End Supply, Factory Kahne Midwest, MYCHRONTOM, and Quick Engineering, as well as his family and the Renfro, Houston, and Cornell families for their continued support.
Ramey is next scheduled to compete on July 3-4 at Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex in Sweet Springs, Mo. in the No. 28 600cc micro sprint entry.
