Ramey Bolts to Season-Opening Win

SWEET SPRINGS, Mo. – Several rain showers throughout Friday and Saturday nearly cancelled the Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex opener, but fervent work by track personnel got the racing surface ironed in enough to proceed with the action. In his first race driving his new Pace Chassis on new Factory Kahne shocks, Gunner Ramey collected his first feature win of the season.
With most expecting a rainout, car counts were lower than normal, and just 11 cars signed in for the restricted micro class. After drawing the lowest pill draw number, Ramey would start on the pole of his heat, the first of two in restrictor competition. He would drop one spot over the course of the ten-lap heat race, finishing second.
The 20-lap feature starting lineup was to be decided by a passing point formula from the heat races, and thus Ramey was to take the green flag from outside the second row. Upon the start, the front-row starters briefly tangled, slowing the early leader enough to allow Ramey to charge into the second spot. With one lap down, a car stalled in turn four brought out yellow-flag conditions. The leader briefly pulled away after the restart while navigating the middle lane, but Ramey continued to work the bottom of the track. He started to click off fast, consistent laps to reel the frontrunner back in; a window for a pass opened on lap nine, and Ramey skillfully negotiated the turn-three berm to get side-by-side with the leader. The No. 28 Pace/Honda machine was first to the line, and then completed the pass entering turn one. A caution just after the halfway point would close the gap between Ramey and his challengers, but the Smithton, Mo. racer was not to be denied, going on to earn the victory.
Ramey would like to thank Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps, Sure Coat Powdercoating, Rob Sneed Shorthorns, McKinney Construction, Ramey Dirtworks, Southwest Storage, 8760 Service Group, Rod End Supply, Factory Kahne Midwest, MYCHRONTOM, and Quick Engineering, as well as his family and the Renfro, Houston, and Cornell families for their continued support.
Ramey is next scheduled to compete on May 1-2 at Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex in Sweet Springs, Mo. in the No. 28 600cc micro sprint entry.
