Inside Line Promotions – COLVILLE, Wash. (June 18, 2019) – Chris Schmelzle is bound for the 48th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup this weekend.
Schmelzle will invade Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., this Thursday through Saturday for the marquee Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event.
“The pill draw format can dictate how your night can go,” he said. “I’m hoping we can draw well enough to put ourselves in a position to make the qualifiers and get as many points as we can. After that if you’re in a half decent position in the main event, if we could get a couple of top 10s I’d be pretty satisfied.”
This weekend will mark Schmelzle’s first races with the ASCS National Tour since June 2018 when he tied his career-best ASCS National Tour finish of 11th. He also earned that result in 2007.
“You really have to be on top of your game and make every lap count,” he said. “If you make mistakes you’ll lose a position or two. You have to make your moves count and be up on the wheel.”
Schmelzle has competed in the event multiple times when it was a 410ci winged sprint car program and more recently as a 360ci winged sprint car show.
“I haven’t run Dirt Cup as a driver a lot, but I’ve been there since 1978 almost every year,” he said. “I think two years ago was our best year. We made all the A Mains and had a good time.”
