Skinner Earns Sixth-Place Finish in ASCS National Tour Race With Borrowed Engine

Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (July 15, 2020) – Marshall Skinner used an underpowered and borrowed engine to score a sixth-place finish with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last Saturday night at Riverside International Speedway.
“I’ve been using my uncle’s engine since I’m waiting on parts to fix mine,” he said. “We were tickled pink to finish sixth with it against the ASCS National Tour. It’s an engine built from used parts that he got for little or nothing. He’s old school and doesn’t believe in spending a lot of money on stuff.”
Skinner began the night by making the most of a good heat race draw.
“I started on the pole of my heat race,” he said. “I knew I had to win it to make the A Main. If you start on the pole and go back at all with ASCS, you’re usually in the B Main.
“The guy on the outside actually took the lead at the start, but I was able to dive under him going into turn three. He tried to do a crossover, but couldn’t make it happen and I led the rest of the way.”
Skinner’s win placed him in the redraw for the night’s main event. He drew the seventh starting position.
“I was able to move up to fifth, but then I had some trouble racing with lapped cars,” he said. “Since I was underpowered I couldn’t afford to scrub off any speed or lose any momentum, but that’s what happened when I was racing with them. That’s when Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) got by me for fifth.
“It was kind of like racing a car with a restrictor plate. I just held it to the floor and tried not to lose any momentum.
“I had hoped that the track would blow off and get slick so that horsepower wouldn’t matter so much. But it stayed heavy all night. That made me even happier about where I finished with that engine. I put 40 tear-offs on before the feature and used almost all of them.”
Skinner plans to take this week off from racing before returning to action on July 25 at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., during an ASCS Mid-South Region show.
“I had planned to race in Mississippi this week, but that’s been canceled due to the virus,” he said. “So I’ll be with my boys when they race go-karts this weekend and then I plan to race in Little Rock the following Saturday.”
