Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (July 11, 2017) – Henry Van Dam recorded his first top-five finish of the season last Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway during the midseason championship night.

The night began with Van Dam setting quick time during qualifying, which only included the drivers who weren’t locked into the scramble.

“We missed the only points night Grays Harbor has had this season so we didn’t get to compete in the scramble,” he said. “Since there were only seven in that we started the main event eighth after setting quick time in qualifying.

“Being that we qualified at 6 p.m. and didn’t get on the track until 9:45 p.m. it was a different scenario than I’ve had. We got racing with some guys early I didn’t think we’d have to race with. We got hung up a bit. I finally got cleared around halfway. Going green to checkered it was tough to make it forward after that.”

Van Dam spent the first half of the race battling for a top five.

“Once we cleared them we made up three seconds on the leader,” he said. “At one point we were 10 seconds back, but once I got to fifth I made up three seconds. We really needed a late caution.”

The fifth-place finish gives Van Dam momentum entering Western Sprint Tour Speedweek races at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., this Friday and Saturday.

“Our typical storyline this season has been not coming out of the gate strong in the feature,” he said. “We spend 10 laps floundering and then we start to get going. It will be key for us to figure out how we can take off on Lap 1 and create that pace from the get-go.”
