Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (July 5, 2017) – Henry Van Dam netted a top-10 finish during the Fred Brownfield Classic last weekend at Grays Harbor Raceway.
The Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader kicked off last Friday when Van Dam advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race.
“We were able to pass a couple of cars on the start and finished second,” he said. “We were able to put pressure on the leader. I felt really good going into the feature.”
The heat race performance earned Van Dam a spot in the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 6 to start the main event on the outside of the third row.
“We got a bad start and then the track took rubber,” he said. “We just rode it out from there. There’s not a lot you can do from that point.”
Van Dam ended with an eighth-place result, which marked his fourth top 10 of the season.
The event concluded on Saturday when Van Dam opened the action by winning a heat race from the pole. That lined him up 11th for the main event.
“Without having passing points and being the second night with four cars already locked in that put us out of the redraw,” he said. “We had a decent start on the initial start of the A Main. Then a car got sideways in front of me and I had to slow up to miss him. I lost a few spots. The race stayed green and then went green for 26 laps so it was really hard to make up the ground we lost.”
Van Dam closed the weekend with a 13th-place finish.
“Overall, I was okay with how we did,” he said. “We made the shows both nights. There were some good cars who stayed in the pits. We had competitive nights. I was happy with our speed. Our pace was decent on Saturday, but we got so far behind from the start it was tough overcome it. Plus, to honor a guy in Fred who meant so much to us it was tough to leave without a smile on your face.”
Van Dam will return to action this Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway.
